playground playgroups

I appreciate the park. It is so much more than just another place to take your kid. It is a connection to your city, a connection to your community, and as I’ve found in Victoria, a great place to watch your kid play while you enjoy a cup of coffee.

When I first moved to Victoria I joined a group that met weekly at different playgrounds around the city. It was a small group but it had two benefits: it gave me some much needed introductions to life in Victoria and the surrounding area, and it made me get out and discover different parts of the city.

But the group slowly dissolved away and then I got pregnant. I stopped exploring the city and just ended up taking the kids to the same old parks, if I even took them to the park at all. Then last May a fellow mom, Erika Palmer, wrote a post for VMB, 11 Amazing Victoria Parks and Playgrounds. Suddenly my mind went back to my old routines all those years ago. I started to go to the park again. I started to bring along my cup of coffee. I started to chat with other moms I met in the park.

My youngest is two years old. She is just discovering the joys of playing with other kids her own age (rather than parallel playing). So this summer I’ve decided it is time to create another group for those of us who need a reminder of how great the playground is. A group to get us out of our backyards and meeting with others in our city.

So I’ve created a Playground Playgroup. We don’t have a Facebook page specific to the group, but I will post the Playgroup schedule in the Events Calendar of this website (and at the bottom of this post), as well as in the Magnificent Moms of 2015 Facebook group. The Playgroup is casual and doesn’t cost anything. You are welcome to come every week or only once over the summer. I plan on running the group through until the second week of September (when fall activities start). Every week I’ll choose a different playground to meet at and I’ll mix it up for locations and include the Westshore and even Sidney! I’ve posted the next four weeks below and into the events calendar. Kids of all ages are welcome. The group will be cancelled if the weather is not cooperating. We will meet at 9:30am every Wednesday morning and people can come and go as they please.

Hope to see you at the playground! I’ll be the one holding a cup of coffee.
